Grihastha yoga

A grihastha (householder) yogi practices yoga through their everyday life. Grihastha yoga offers an accessible path to realization by acknowledging the materialist world we live in and encouraging us to engage in attachments, and the suffering that comes with it, as an opportunity to refine the mind, reduce the ego, and evolve.

It is not through meditation retreats or study of ancient scriptures, but through navigating the discomfort, duality, and complexity of life with discernment that can slowly guide us towards liberation.

Grithatha yoga requires us to master the dharmas (duties) we have for ourselves and those around us like committing to a daily mindfulness practice (sādhanā), nurturing relationships we hold, and fulfilling the responsibilities of the roles we play (i.e. daughter, sister, partner, friend, roommate, manager). I’ve realized that doing this fully and authentically takes lifetimes.

It is the women in my life who have modeled this path by acting with empathy and awareness, loving unconditionally, and finding patience and contentment in the worst of circumstances.

I offer classes to immigrant women in my community as a way to honor one another and build resilience on this path.
